PolyShades offers both stain plus topcoat in a single product, meaning its labels necessarily straddle the line between the visual cues we use for stains and those we use for topcoats. A soft conversion meant we’d have to signal sheen in the same manner as the old labels (via background color), though the use of a darkening gradient will tie PolyShades to the newly revamped topcoat labels. Like Gel Stain, we placed the color name in a Minwax logo-shaped enclosure. Further, a split swatch showcased how each color performed when used over bare or already-finished wood. In place of the Professional Results Guaranteed seal, we highlighted the one-step nature of the product, emphasizing the crucial “no wiping” application instruction.
